The Durwood Evans Classic is a competition of experienced rescue providers and instructors from across the state. The competitors have no idea of the problem and have limited resources in meeting the
challenge of completing the problem. Hailing from GatesCounty, Durwood has 43 years of active service in the rescue field and was awarded the Steve Richey Lifetime Achievment Award this year.
This year’s problem involved vehicle extrication. The teams had to remove a victim trapped under the car and then using hand tools, remove the driver’s door, remove the roof and steering wheel, and
then pull the steering wheel with a come-along. The competing teams accomplished the problem in less than 30 minutes (due to implending thunderstorms) and still had time to please the audience with lots of
fun, humor, and good hearted spirit.
