Oldie Goldies

The Oldie Goldies is an invitation only competition of experienced rescue providers and instructors from across the state.  It has been suggested that the competition be named in honor of Durwood Evans, past Chief of Gates County Rescue Squad, who came up with the idea of the competition.  Durwood has 42 years of active service in the rescue field.

 The competing teams were chosen randomly from a hat with the team captains being members of OSFM’s Training Division:  Joe Burris, Gene Gladdin, and Richard Caudill.  The problem was designed by Laura Hinshaw, Training Officer of WSRS.  The teams did not have knowledge of the scenario until the beginning of the problem.

 This year’s inaugural problem involved moving a piece of concrete off a slab with a gin pole, and then lifting a concrete slab to free a trapped victim.  The competing teams accomplished the problem in less than 45 minutes and still had time to please the audience with lots of fun, humor, and good hearted spirit.
