Each year at the Winston-Salem Rescue Squad annual dinner distinguished individuals are honored for there selfless training and commitment. These individuals have excelled in all aspects and are a valued asset to the department. These individuals are based in three categories. Rookie of the Year which is when a new member joins the department and stands out above the rest as one who show the potential to excel and strives to learn. Squad member of the year who will go over and beyond when it comes to training, on calls, and willing to help out without hesitation. And the Carl Shields award, this award is named after Carl Shields who is one of our original members who tirelessly gave his time to better the squad without any hesitation. He devoted many years to better the squad and watched it grow over many decades. So as the squad give out the Carl Shields award it evaluates the membership and bases its decision off of the same values and determination that Carl Shields carried.
